Yesterday while driving home I discovered my car had the inability to rev past 3k RPM. It seemed temporary but then on the way into work this morning it returned, along with the check engine light. Searching the internet seems to show that my car may be in limp mode, possibly due to a bad knock sensor. This may be right, since I did drive through a rather large puddle while merging back on the highway, but we won't know until Thursday when I bring it in for a previously scheduled scheduled service appointment.
Have a Golf that is very likely over 3000 RPM for your Monday morning.

run those codes! It likely could be a knock sensor though for sure.

Lots of places will lend you a code reader so you can check out what error code is being thrown.

Our GTI has been in limp mode for two reasons. First was when some underhood connections weren't sealed and any heavy rain or car wash would cause it to Christmas tree. Took the dealer many trips to fix that. Second was when the flapper in the intake manifold decided to self destruct at 35k for no particular reason. Got a free walnut blasting of the caked up intake valves thrown in so yay I guess.
Sir_Stig: and toxic masculinity ruins the party again.

I wouldn't suspect knock sensor. Never seen one of those trigger limp mode before, even if disconnected. It wouldn't surprise me if there are some cars that will trigger it because of one of those, it just seems unlikely.

Limp mode is just a fail-safe to protect the car when something is malfunctioning. It could be a lot of things. I'm a GTI owner, and though it's been quite some time since I've been active in the community, the most common cause of limp mode for GTI's was ignition coils. Removing the engine cover to make sure all 4 ( or 5 in your case) igntion coils are seated properly against the valve cover was a good place to start. If you have a VAG-COM or a friend that does, you could pull codes and check where the error is.

Viagra: clear your codes and get out of limp mode

That's a good suggestion. I've heard about the coils being a problem before. I don't have access to a code reader at the moment but I think i'll be investing in one now.

I just had an amazing idea for a Viagra commercial with that comment as inspiration.
